Marbello Project: Progress as of early December

So far we have completed the interior of the second floor which contains the master bedroom, guest bedroom and two bathrooms. We had our first house guests who stayed on the second floor and they loved being in the converted containers. We added our completely solar hot water tank and are thrilled with its performance. We have begun the installation of the rooftop terrace and have almost finished the installation of the garage door. The inner walls are built for the third story bathroom and office/bedroom. We are currently working on the third floor and terrace electrical.

Marbello Project: Progress as of mid November

We have made great progress so far on the house as a whole and especially the second floor. We will have the second floor ready to live in on Saturday.

Progress on the whole house:  We have repainted the front of the house on the first level. The solar water heater tank is installed and we should have hot water soon. We are having a custom garage door built, and work is starting on the rooftop terrace next week.

Progress on the second floor: The hardwood floors came out great! The exterior doors are being installed. The interior doors and pocket doors are all installed. The bathroom stone vanities are almost finished. The custom medicine cabinets and mirrors will be installed in the bathrooms on Saturday. We have all the sinks, toilets and tubs ready to be installed later today. The entire electrical system is installed and tested. The walls have two coats of paint on them. We are beginning esthetic touchups on the little things that need it.

Progress on the third floor: The bathroom stone floor is finished. We have started painting the walls in the bathroom with the textured paint. We are beginning the work on the third floor electrical system.

Marbello Project: Next Steps

Now that the first floor is complete, we’re moving on to the next steps of the project.

We began work on the containers by cutting out the walls where the two 2nd floor containers meet. This floor will be made into two bedrooms and two full bathrooms, with a screened in porch off the Master Bedroom.

We are also building the structure to hold the solar hot water heater on the rooftop.

We are also building a tire wall in front of the house, to act as a dual retaining wall and stairwell to the front yard.

Marbello Project: First Floor Bathroom

Now that we have moved in, we will be posting pictures of various parts of the first floor, starting with the bathroom.

This modern shower and jacuzzi tub has many amenities, such as built in lighting and radio, but it is also eco-friendly, using a low flow shower head. Also, we will be installing a solar hot water heater system so that we can have hot water baths and showers.

All of the sinks, showers, and laundry in the house will flow into our gray water system, keeping our yard and garden watered and green all year round. Also, the TV/DVD player shown in this picture runs off 12 volt DC power, which conserves energy.

Continuing with the eco-friendly theme, the toilets in all the bathrooms are low-flush, with small tanks, using about half the water of a regular toilet.

Marbello Project: Septic System

We are building a three chamber septic system, rated for use by 20 people.

  • The first chamber is a 5,000 liter tank where solids and liquids are separated.
  • Next the liquids go into the second chamber, which is a 2,500 liter tank with a gravel filter system.
  • Finally, the third chamber is a sand filled leach pit. After the liquids go through this chamber, they go out into the water table as clean water, which is good for the environment.

First chamber -- 5,000 liter plastic tank (concrete basin will be poured around it)

Second chamber -- 2,500 liter plastic tank (concrete basin will be poured around it)
